When it comes to comparing these 2 software products there a few things that come to mind:
Real-time online collaboration for multiple people
If you want to get your whole team aboard for a digital workshop or a distributed brainstorm session so that all changes other people make are visible without refreshing the page, then your choice is UXPressia.
Both platforms have commenting. At UXPressia, you can comment in real time with your team and guest viewers coming through direct link. You can also mention and get notified within the app. Plus, you can leverage Slack integration to get updated in any channel of your choice.
Variety of sections within the tools
In Smaply, there are only 7 sections in their journey mapping tool: text section, storyboard, channels, emotional graph, dramatic arc, backstage and file lane.
At UXPressia we offer 16 sections including:
- Processes and Channels section that lets you visualize the type of interactions and touchpoints in a very visual and cool way.
- Document section where you can upload any documents related to the journey map.
- Video section where you can add and play videos online
- The funnel section which is an integrated real-time data coming straight from your Google Analytics and Mixpanel account.
When it comes to personas, there’s a few predefined sections and optional text sections that Smaply offers. Plus, you can’t change the layout much.

Direct URL Sharing
This one is a hot feature. Imagine you need to share your journey map with your client or manager. Now, they don’t have an account at UXPressia. And I don’t think you will tell them they need to sign up and pay for an account - this just doesn’t make any sense.
Both UXPressia and Smaply offer this feature where you can get a URL, send it over to the other person and they can view it without ever logging in. But here’s the catch - in Smaply it’s a view-only, whereas at UXPressia you can collaborate and co-create in real time with whoever you want.
To put this into perspective, imagine you have a workshop at your company and you invited a bunch of folks from different departments. If you want to collaborate with them at Smaply, you will have to go for an Enterprise package.
At UXPressia you just pass everyone a link and you’re all set for a super-productive workshop without paying any extra dollar.
That is nothing to say that you can’t share in Smaply unless you upgrade. With our forever-free plan you can share your project with 1 person and even try collaboration.
Smaply does not have undo and redo as of now. So if you delete something by mistake before an important meeting or presentation - say adios to the deleted parts.
At UXPressia, we do have undo and redo which you can use infinitely within a single session.
It’s a time- and a life-saver.
Imagine you're working at UXPressia on a journey map and your Internet connection breaks up. What happens with all the changes? They will sync back with the cloud as soon as you're back online. Just make sure you don't refresh or close the page until you're sure that Internet is back.
While Smaply has exports to pdf, png, excel, and even ppt, we only offer pdf and png (although the rest is coming!).

Not to mention that a possibility to add your own logo comes with our Pro package ($24/month) while Smaply allows this only on their Business offer that comes at 100 euros/month.
Smaply is a fully manual tool while at UXPressia you can add funnel sections connected to your web analytics tools such as Mixpanel or Google Analytics where you can get automated data poured into your journey map which makes you map come to life and become more actionable.
With UXPressia you also embed a multitude of prototypes, videos, and whatnot using the embed code section.
Plus, there’s a number of integration coming down the road so it will become even cooler - Jira, Google Analytics, NPS services, public API, etc. That’s something to look forward to.
Set of tools
We offer Customer Journey Mapping, Personas, and Impact Maps. Smaply offers Customer Journey Mapping, Personas, and Stakeholder maps. No winner here - it’s just a different offer is all. So figure out for yourself which one suits you more.
This is debatable as each person is unique and perceives interfaces differently, but we find Smaply a little harder to use than UXPressia. Plus, at Smaply you always start with a blank page when building journey maps which some will view as a deal breaker. It’s just best to try and decide for yourself.
Now this is the last point and it’s pretty huge.
Smaply’s STARTER package comes at $30 USD/month per 1 license while our professional plan comes at $24 USD. $6 each month sums up to $72/year.
And then at Smaply you can get a REGULAR option for around $60 USD which will give you 3 users in the package. Now, If you want to get 3 users at UXPressia, it will cost you $72/month which is slightly more but consider this: if you go annually you will pay only for 10 months and it will sum up to $720/year for 3 users. Which is exactly how much Smaply asks for that same period of time for 3 users.
